Course for Collaborative Pianist, Assistant Conductor and Répétiteur

The course, for piano students, teaches the techniques of accompanying opera singers in the musical preparation and performance of a role — recitatives, solo arias and ensemble numbers (duets, trios, quartets, quintets and concertati) — taking account of the stylistic practice required by the period, the composer and the unwritten but long-established traditions of the operatic repertoire.

By the end of the course students are able to prepare and accompany pieces from the standard operatic repertoire, opening the way to a professional career in music theatre.

Study programme

The course covers the study of the opera vocal score and the accompaniment of arias and ensembles from repertoire works of different composers and styles, chosen from:
• Arias and ensembles, or a scene, from operas by W. A. Mozart;
• Arias and ensembles, or a scene, from bel canto operas by G. Rossini, V. Bellini or G. Donizetti;
• Arias and ensembles, or a scene, from operas by G. Verdi;
• Arias and ensembles, or a scene, from operas by G. Puccini or from the verismo repertoire (P. Mascagni, R. Leoncavallo, and others).

Any final examination consists of the performance of an aria and/or an ensemble number studied during the course.
