Her Directorship
At the Rome Conservatoire she served as Deputy Director from October 2005. She was Deputy Commissioner of the Conservatoire from 28 September 2006 to 9 October 2007, acting as director under article 6 of Presidential Decree 132/2003. She was subsequently elected Director for the 2007/2010 term, at the end of which she was reappointed for a further term until 2013.
Over her two terms, Edda Silvestri focused on one overriding aim: to restore to the Santa Cecilia Conservatoire its standing, its central position and its proper functions, so that it would once again be the largest institution of musical education in Italy. That aim was fully achieved, with significant results on several fronts: a stronger teaching body; the Conservatoire repositioned within the national and international performance scene; renewed high-level relations with other institutions in the field; and the refurbishment of the premises and of the Conservatoire’s instrument collection.
Thanks to Maestro Edda Silvestri, who firmly pursued, on her own initiative and given the need for more space, a second site for the Conservatoire, and through three years of sustained lobbying of political and military institutions (2010–2013), the Santa Cecilia Conservatoire obtained from the Ministry of Defence the transfer of the Sant’Andrea delle Fratte complex — a former convent, later the Reali Equipaggi barracks and then the seat of the General Staff’s Fifth Department. Its 1,400 square metres were converted into classrooms and rehearsal rooms just 700 metres away from the historic premises in via dei Greci.
