The F. M. Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique is a

method devised to release the physical and mental tensions

that many of us accumulate over a lifetime. We often remain unaware of these tensions until we fall ill or experience pain of various kinds — headaches, back pain, breathing and heart difficulties and countless other symptoms. In our first years of life we use the body well, but as we grow we tend, for various reasons, to lose much of that natural potential. The Alexander Technique can help us to

recover that ease and grace even in the simplest movements. In Italy few people know the Alexander Technique, and as a result many suffer needlessly — and yet there is nothing finer than watching someone move in a coordinated, harmonious way. The technique takes its name from F. M. Alexander (1869–1955) , an Australian actor who, at the start of a promising stage career, began to have serious vocal problems. In trying to solve them he discovered that the cause lay in the way he used himself. Alexander identified the dynamic relationship between the head, the neck and the back as a basic principle of coordination. Watching himself perform in front of mirrors, he noticed that he tended to stiffen his neck, compress the larynx and push the air out through his mouth. This narrowed his back and led to the loss of his voice, especially on stage. The Alexander Technique can therefore be said to have been born in order to solve a problem caused by the tension and fear that so often accompany our everyday and artistic activities. Alexander not only solved his vocal problems but improved his general health. From 1904 onwards he spent most of his life in London, where he had many pupils, among them eminent figures of the day: George Bernard Shaw, Aldous Huxley, John Dewey and Frank Pierce Jones, who carried out important scientific experiments on Alexander’s principle at Tufts University. In a series of individual and group lessons, a qualified teacher helps students, through light contact of the hands and verbal instruction , to improve the organisation of their own body: the distribution of weight, muscle tone and the relationship between the parts of the body in movement. The student is not passive: after only a few lessons they begin to put the basic principles of the work into practice. Individual lessons last

30 to 45 minutes . Certified Alexander Technique teachers train at schools approved by STAT (stat.org.uk) or by its affiliated associations. A training course normally involves at least 1,600 hours of compulsory attendance , spread over three years. A study carried out some years ago by the universities of Southampton and Bristol concluded that the Alexander Technique is effective againstchronic back pain in the long term. The research was published in the British Medical Journal., distribuite nell’arco di tre anni.

“By changing the use of body and mind, the Alexander Technique helps to remove the cause of many of the complaints typical of our modern way of life.”

"La tecnica Alexander aiuta, attraverso il cambiamento dell’uso del corpo-mente, a rimuovere la causa di molti disturbi tipici del nostro stile di vita moderno."
