He is currently principal conductor of the Berliner Symphoniker, a post he has held since 1997. During his tenure he has given more than 150 concerts at the Berlin Philharmonie, as well as many open-air concerts at the Gendarmenmarkt and the Kulturbrauerei.

principal conductor of the Haifa Symphony, and from 1986 to 1993 he led the Kibbutz Chamber Orchestra in Tel Aviv, touring regularly in Europe. He co-founded Musica Nova in Tel Aviv and brought the Mendelssohn Players to Berlin . His operatic repertoire takes inmore than 40 works of the German, Italian, French, Russian and English repertoire , as well as world premieres including Franz Hummel’s “Gesualdo” and Magret Wolf’s “Kirisk”, to a libretto by Chingiz Aitmatov. From 1993 to 2000 he was music director of the Pfalztheater in Kaiserslautern, Germany, where heconducted more than 600 performances , including the opening concerts of the new theatre. He has also appeared at Opera Ontario in Canada and has stagedopera productions in Israel (with the New Israeli Opera and the Kibbutz Chamber Orchestra). He has undertaken several special opera projects, among them Glinka’s “A Life for the Tsar” in partnership with theBolshoi Theatre in Moscow , and a new version of Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Mozart and Salieri”, of which he was director, conductor and designer (sets and costumes). Lior Shambadal gives advanced coursesworldwide in conducting and in lieder interpretation for
singers and orchestra . Committed to supporting young artists, he has established annual scholarships in honour of the violist Daniel Benyamini (former principal viola of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and member of the Tel Aviv Quartet) and of Mishel Piastro (former leader of the New York Philharmonic and assistant conductor to Arturo Toscanini), and is responsible for the annual selection for the IBM Foundation. Shambadal was born in Tel Aviv, where he studied viola, trombone, composition (with Sergiu Natra) andconducting . His studies took him to the Salzburg Mozarteum , where he worked with Carl Melles. After moving to Vienna he studied with celebrated conductors such as Hans Swarowsky, Carlo Maria Giulini, Igor Markevitch, Sergiu Celibidache and Franco Ferrara.
